Omicron infection: What are the symptoms?

Despite the increased number of infections attributed to the Omicron variant of coronavirus across the globe, researchers are still sceptical about its symptoms. The similarities between the symptoms of COVID-19 due to the Omicron variant and common flu have made the distinction extremely difficult. Here are some of the most common symptoms of COVID-19 due to the Omicron strain:

Common symptoms of the Omicron variant of COVID-19

Runny nose

According to the COVID symptom study app ZOE COVID, which gathers data of daily infection, infected person symptoms, and vaccination status, a runny nose is one of the most common symptoms of the Omicron variant. Though a runny nose is usual in the winter, if the symptoms worsen with each passing day, get a COVID-19 test done and isolate yourself from your dear ones.

Sore throat and cough

Whether it was the first wave, second wave, or the ongoing third wave, cough and a sore throat have become characteristic features of coronavirus infection. However, this time, infected people are more likely to develop this symptom in the Omicron variant. Severely infected ones may be advised hospitalisation by the doctor. In which case, you can use your health insurance policy or Corona Kavach policy and get hospitalised at one of the reputed hospitals in your city.

Loss of smell and/or taste

One of the most prevalent symptoms in the first and second waves of COVID was the loss of smell and/or taste. Furthermore, a small percentage of persons who have had these symptoms for a long time have developed parosmia or an altered sense of smell. However, in the Omicron variant, this symptom is rarely seen.

Back pain and muscle ache

When the Omicron variant was first detected in South Africa, the first and most common symptoms reported from the country were back pain and muscle ache. As the virus spread, other countries too reported myalgia, the medical term for muscular discomfort. So, if you have been experiencing these symptoms for a few days, get yourself checked for the Omicron strain of coronavirus. If your condition is severe, you may require hospitalisation. Rest assured that your health insurance policy or a Corona Kavach policy will cover the hospital bill for COVID treatment expenses.

Fatigue

This symptom is common in almost every strain of the coronavirus. If you are experiencing fatigue with any other symptom, there is a high possibility of having a coronavirus infection.

Other common symptoms of the Omicron variant include fever or chills, headache, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. Many prestigious medical institutions are still studying the various symptoms of Omicron. Therefore, it may not be a good idea to dismiss the above symptoms as mere physical discomfort.

When should you seek emergency medical assistance?

Whether Delta or Omicron, contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following medical conditions.

  • Trouble breathing
  • Persistent chest discomfort and pressure
  • Confusion
  • Incapability to get out of bed or stay awake
  • Change in skin, lips, and nails colour

To conclude

The World Health Organisation or WHO has labelled Omicron as the variant of concern since it contains more mutations than any other strain previously identified. The lethality of this virus is still under scrutiny. As a result, to avoid getting the virus, we should adhere to official government guidelines, limit our outings, and correctly wear masks. We must also secure ourselves and our families with health insurance and critical illness insurance to avoid any medical emergency from eating into our savings.
