The reason why some people do not gain weight

We have always been told that to maintain a healthy weight, we must be mindful of what we eat and how much we workout. But we all know at least one person who gorges on doughnuts and pizzas, does not do any workout and yet never adds an inch to their waistlines. This often makes people wonder what exactly is the secret behind their slim figure. It is just their metabolism or something else? Here we have tried to decode why some slim people never gain weight no matter what they eat.

The secret behind their slim figure

A fast metabolism is not the only reason behind it. The answer to this question is quite complex as several factors are at play. Genetics, nutrition, and even behavioural factors are involved which help slim people to maintain their body weight. Each individual is different and the way they can maintain their weight depends on the fact how much the aforementioned factors interfere in their daily lives.

Also, most people who appear to eat a lot in front of you actually eat as much as you do. Just because they have sweets in front of you every day does not mean they eat more. It could be possible that they compensate for it later by having only two meals in a day. That means their daily calorie intake remains the same as yours

Staying physically active also matters

Another factor that can help slim people maintain weight could be their level of physical activity. Here staying physically active does not only mean spending hours in the gym. You just have to move more throughout the day or engage in household chores. Some studies suggest that some people are genetically influenced to move their body more than others, which helps them to burn a considerable amount of calories and maintain a healthy weight. Besides, some people burn more calories by performing the same exercise than others. This entirely depends on their genetics

The role of genetics in weight gain and weight loss

Staying physically active also matters

Genetics play a major role in a person’s tendency to gain or lose weight. According to a 2019 study published in the PLOS Genetics, over 250 different regions of DNA can be associated with obesity. For the study, the researchers examined the data collected from 1,622 healthy people with low body mass index (BMI), 1,985 people with severe obesity and 10,433 control people of normal weight. At the end of the study, they concluded that thin participants had fewer genes associated with obesity. But genes are not the only thing that contributes to weight gain or weight loss. During the study, the researchers also found some people who had genetic determinants for obesity yet they were slim.

Our genes do have a role to play in determining our body weight, but it is not the only driving force. Your sleeping pattern, your lifestyle habit, your level of alcohol intake, food choices, physical activity also determines your weight. So, if you are really trying to come to shape, don’t just focus on eating less or moving more, rather make changes in your lifestyle habits. This will help you lose weight effectively and will improve your overall health.
